Etsuo A. Susaki graduated from Kyushu University School of Medicine in 2002 and received his Ph.D. in 2007. Following a period of postdoctoral research at Kyushu University, in 2010 he joined the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology as postdoctoral Research Fellow (with Dr. Hiroki Ueda). In 2013 he moved to the Department of Systems Pharmacology, The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine, where he rose through the academic ranks to Associate Professor. Having established his own laboratory, in 2021 he moved to his present position as Professor at the Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine. Since 2024 he has been Head of Nakatani Biomedical Spatialomic Hub, and Visiting Scientist, Institute for Quantum Life Science, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST).
Etsuo A. Susaki’s primary research interests are the functional states and regulatory mechanisms of multicellular systems. Specifically, he invented the CUBIC framework for cell-omics to study multicellular systems. He is also proficient in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. He is currently applying his unique research background and techniques to multiple biomedical applications, including 3D spatial omics, 3D clinical histopathology, microscopy development, cancer drug discoveries, and multicellular synthetic biology. He has also initiated projects using hydra species as models for aging and multicellular synthetic biology studies.
