New President Elect for FAOBMB

At the recent FAOBMB Council meeting held in Bangkok in November 2012, it was announced that the new FAOBMB President Elect is to be Professor Kiyoshi Fukui, from Japan.

We welcome Professor Fukui, whose term as President Elect is for the calendar year 2013. He will become President of FAOBMB on 1 January 2014.

Professor Kiyoshi Fukui, M.D., Ph.D. – brief biography
Kiyoshi Fukui was born in 1954 in Japan. In 1979, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, and started postgraduate study as a fellow at the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, Washington University in St. Louis, USA (1979–1982). In 1984, he received his Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kyoto University. He was an investigator at the Laboratory of Immunochemistry, Department of Biochemistry, National Cardiovascular Center Research Institute (1984–1995), where he started molecular biological studies on D-amino acid oxidase and renin-binding protein. In 1995, he became Professor at the Institute for Enzyme Research (KOSOKEN), The University of Tokushima.
He serves as Executive Director (2009~2013, 2005~2007) of the Japanese Biochemical Society. His research was first reported at 5th FAOB Congress at Seoul, Korea (1989), then he participated in the 12th FAOBMB Symposium in Tokushima, Japan, 11th FAOBMB Congress in Kyoto , Japan, and 21st FAOBMB Congress in Melbourne, Australia (OzBio2010). His current research is focused on the medical aspects of D-amino acid metabolism in the brain and pathophysiology of apoptosis.
